Royal approval for ID printers

The makers of Magicard ID card printers have been given a royal seal of approval for their innovative designs.

Ultra Electronics were presented with their third Queen's Award for Enterprise for their Alto, Opera, and Tempo card printers.

The award, which followed a recommendation by Tony Blair, was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset at a formal ceremony on the 19th July. Ultra also used the event to announce the official opening of a brand new printer design facility in Weymouth.

Ultra said the Magicard printers use electronic and plastics technology to bring high-quality ID cards within the reach of schools, clubs, and small businesses for the first time.

Ray Coles, Ultra's Managing Director said:

"We have been developing and manufacturing thermal transfer printers for over 20 years, and this is our third Queen's Award."

Coles said the technology had initially been designed for military use, but it was now gaining wider recognition.

He added: "I am particularly pleased that our latest entry-level printers have been recognised in this way, because our design teams have been very innovative in their use of plastic mouldings, opening up high quality, low cost ID badging to many more small organisations around the world."
